If you are searching for the picture perfect venue, with you walking leisurely through an enchancing landscape, welcome to Fitzroy Inn, arguably the finest country inn in scenic New South Wales Southern Highlands. It takes only an hour by car from downtown Sydney and about two hours by train to get to the inn. The inn takes the form of a charming Victorian colonial building with a distinctive wrap around verandah. This place is steeped in history; it opened in 1836 and has regaled guests ever since.
A Celebrated History
Fitzroy Inn started its journey in 1836 as a“Traveler’s Inn”. Although the name has changed, the building remains the same – its hallowed interiors gracefully carrying the 170 year old tradition and is a window to the country’s colonial past.
Historians have described Fitzroy Inn’s original kitchen as one of the “finest examples” of a convict era constructed kitchen that is still remaining – and functioning in Australia. The middle of the floor has a “water-well”, which is cut by hand into shale underneath the building. It is a remarkable testimony of convict craftsmanship. Prisoners were kept in the erstwhile convict cells inside the hotel while they were being transported to Berrima Gaol. The cells continued to retain their original iron shackles and also the hand turned bars which effectively restrained their unwilling guests.
